Pope Francis

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam.
Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum. Dominum Georgium Marium
 Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Bergoglio
Qui nomen sibi imposuit Franciscum.
Viva il Papa

And with those words, the world received the news of its new Pope Francis. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was chosen by the College of Cardinals to lead the Catholic Church. The 76 year-old Jesuit was the archbishop of Buenos Aires and that gives us a number of firsts. He is the first Jesuit ever to become pope, the first pope from the Americas (this hemisphere, Latin America, Argentina, etc) and the first pope to take the name Francis after St. Francis of Assisi. What a wonderful start! What does this all mean? I would like to refer to a very respected Vatican observer, Rocco Palmo, who says this on his blog:

By choosing the name of the founder of his community's traditional rivals, the 266th Roman pontiff – the first from the American continent, home to more than half of the 1.2 billion-member church – has signaled three things: his desire to be a force of unity in a polarized fold, a heart for the poor, and his intent to "repair God's house, which has fallen into ruin"... that is, to rebuild the church.
I am sure that the papers will be filled with his information and mis-information over the next few days. Let us remember the new pope in our prayers.

O God, who in your providential design
willed that your Church be built
upon blessed Peter, whom you set over the other apostles,
look with favor, we pray, on Francis, our Pope,
and grant that he, whom you have made Peter’s successor,
may be for your people a visible source and foundation
of unity in faith and of communion.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

Waiting...Waiting...

This morning we again saw black smoke. Thus, there have been 3 votes so far that were inconclusive. and so we continue to wait. As I mentioned previously, the smoke appears twice a day at around noon and again around 7:00 pm Rome time. there are of course 4 votes taken each day, 2 sets of 2 votes. the smoke appears after the second vote of each section unless a pope is chosen during the first round. based on Missouri time, it looks something like this:

-4:30am CST (if it is white)

-6:00am CST (white or black)

-11:30am CST (if it is white)

-1:00pm CST (white or black)

In the meantime, here was an interesting article on the smoke from the Vatican Information Service:

HOW THE WHITE AND BLACK “FUMATE” ARE PRODUCED

Vatican City, 12 March 2013 (VIS) – Beginning with the Conclave in 2005, in order to better distinguish the colour of the “fumate” (smoke signalling the election or non-election of a pontiff), a secondary apparatus is used to generate the smoke in addition to the traditional stove in which the Cardinal electors' ballots are burned. This device stands next to the ballot-burning stove and has a compartment where, according to the results of the vote, different coloured-smoke generating compounds can be mixed. The result is requested by means of an electronic control panel and lasts for several minutes while the ballots are burning in the other stove.

For a black “fumata” the chemical compound is made of potassium perchlorate, anthracene, and sulphur. The white “fumata” is a mixture of potassium chlorate, lactose, and rosin. The rosin is a natural amber resin obtained from conifers. Prior to 2005 the black smoke was obtained by using smoke black or pitch and the white smoke by using wet straw.

The stove-pipes of the stove and the smoke-producing device join up and exit the roof of the Sistine Chapel as one pipe leading to the chimney installed on the ridge of the roof, which is visible from St. Peter's Square. To improve the airflow the pipe is pre-heated by electrical resistance and it also has a backup fan.

Beautiful Procession and Black Smoke

The full splendor of the Catholic Church was on display today as the Conclave began. As we know now, the first vote resulted in black smoke (no Pope), but that was expected. So now we move into the second day of the Conclave and anxiously await the decision.
If you were not able to watch the Cardinals process into the Sistine Chapel, I have embedded it below and you can also view it on my video page or on the Vatican website. It is a beautiful ceremony and well worth the time to watch.
Let us continue to pray for our Holy Mother Church.

The Big Day is Here

Today is the day, and so the Conclave begins. The Cardinals are swearing in as I write this. In fact it is the Cardinal Bishops that are swearing in right now. Very Exciting!! You will note that the oaths are taken individually showing the gravity of the situation. You can of course follow this live on EWTN, and if you don't have access to a television, you can follow the live stream on your computer. The link is on their website and you can find it HERE.
In case you, like I, have trouble trying to remember the time difference to Rome, I have placed a clock with Rome time on the front page and on the sidebar of my blog just to the right.
Now for the smoke signals, they will occur twice a day according to the press release, unless, of course, we have a new pope:
Since there are two votes each morning and afternoon, Fr. Lombardi stated that the 'fumata' (smoke signalling the election or non-election of a pontiff) that is produced from the burning of the ballots from those two voting processes could be expected around 12:00pm, in the case of the morning, or 7:00pm, in the case of the evening, unless the first of the two votes produces an election. In such an instance, the “fumata” would obviously take place earlier.
Let us continue in earnest to pray for the Cardinal Electors as they select, under the Guidance of the Holy Spirit, our new Roman Pontiff.

O God, eternal shepherd, who govern your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit. one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fr. Lombardi indicated during the press briefing today that the date of the beginning of the Conclave may be announced this evening, at 7 p.m. Rome time. (1 pm New York/10 am Los Angeles)
It would probably be early next week.
The Cardinals meeting in General Congregation will vote on the matter in the afternoon/evening meeting. There are now, officially, 115 Electors.  77 are going to required to elect a new Pope.
By the way, here is a short video clip on the preparation of the Sistine Chapel for the conclave. Very cool to watch AND it’s short!

Prayer Request From...The Vatican

3/5/2013

This just delivered from our friends at Catholic Vote:

The Vatican has called the universal church to pray tomorrow at 5 PM Rome time, for the Cardinal-Electors who will soon select a new Pope.

That’s Wednesday, March 6th at 11 AM Eastern / 8 AM Pacific Time.

While the official start of the Conclave has not yet been announced, the Cardinals will gather tomorrow at the Altar of the Chair in St. Peter’s Basilica for recitation of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and then Vespers.

…and the Vatican has called on Catholics around the world to join them in prayer.

The latest buzz from Rome is that over 5000 media credentials have been approved from 66 nations in 24 languages. The world is watching because the world is intrigued by the mystery of the Church.

The world is watching because the world is seeking answers that are ultimately only found in Jesus Christ and His Church.

The Church asked for our prayers. Let's deliver them!

Mark your calendar for tomorrow at 11 AM Eastern // 8 AM Pacific Time.

Millions of Catholics across the globe will be joining you.

Something Fun! School Holds Conclave!

One of my favorite blogs, Fr. Z, has a great post from a St. Louis School! The school scheduled a papal conclave to help the students understand what goes one. Remember, for many of them, this is their first experience with a new pope. There are some really GREAT pictures, sure to bring a smile to your face. Take about 30 seconds and check out this great article and pictures HERE.

UPDATE: So I thought that this was a school in St. Louis. As it turns out this wonderful school called St. Louis Catholic School is actually in Alexandria, VA. Still a good idea and great pictures.

The Meetings Begin

3/4/2013

**All times are Rome Time.** The General Congregation opened this morning at 9.30. This was the first daily gathering of all the cardinals including cardinals over the age of 80 and is set to run until 1.30. After a break for lunch and rest period, there will be an unusual evening session which will start at 5.30.

The latest gossip says that an announcement on a Conclave start-date is not expected today. Under the rules of the motu proprio, issued by Benedict XVI prior to his resignation, which allows the College of Cardinals to ditch the standard 15-day waiting period from the moment a vacancy is triggered, all participating cardinal-electors must be present before the College can debate and eventually set the timetable of the conclave which is decided by a majority vote.

And just a reminder, Cardinal electors are generally forbidden to communicate with the outside world until a new pope is determined, in fact, they are sworn not to do so. So don’t believe any tweets, blogs, chirps or texts saying otherwise. Just watch the chimney for smoke. Sometimes the old way really is the best way.

In the meantime, let us all continue to pray fro the cardinals and the election of our new pope. If you are looking for some prayers, here is a wonderful novena for the election…
